Moscow IFF Competition: Postcard

    Kaneto Shindô, age 99 and a Moscow IFF veteran, returns to the festival where he first presented his films 50 years ago, and where he received a Lifetime Achievement award (at the 25th Moscow IFF).

     The highly respected director screens his film Postcard in the main competition.

    Born in Hiroshima on 28 April 1912 , he joined Sinko Kinema in 1934 and studied script writing under director Kenji Mizoguchi before moving to Shochiku Ofuna Studio. In 1950 he set up Kindai Eiga Kyokai, and directed Aisai Monogatari. Three of his films were awarded in Moscow: Naked Island (1960), Live Today, Die Tomorrow (1971), and Will to Live (1999).

    {mosimage}Postcard is a film about love and people staying true to each other. Towards the end of the war, one hundred middle-aged soldiers were sent to the frontline, according to lots drawn by their superior officer. On the night of the lottery, a soldier, expecting to be killed in action, leaves a postcard from his wife with a comrade, Keita Matsuyama. The card reads, "It is the festival today, but the air feels empty without your presence." The soldier asks Keita to let his wife know that he had read the postcard. When the war ends, and six survivors out of the 100 return home, but no one awaits Keita at home. His wife has gone off with his father, not expecting Keita to return alive. Tomoko, who wrote the postcard, was persuaded to re-marry her husband's younger brother, but he was also killed in the war. Her father-in-law has died of shock, and her mother-in-law has killed herself, leaving Tomoko alone in a poverty-stricken farmhouse. It is at this point Keita visits her with the postcard, and learns of her reality.

    {mosimage}The budget of Postcard is 200 million yen. It received funding from three companies: KINDAI EIGA KYOKAI, Watanabe Corporation, and Plandas. KINDA EIGA KYOKAI handles the foreign distribution. The director's son, Jiro Shindo, iss a producer of the film and will visit Moscow Film Festival, bringing a video greeting and best regards from the director.
