FNE at TIFF: Romanian Days - Somewhere in Palilula

{mosimage}CLUJ-NAPOCA: Somewhere in Palilula/Undeva la Palilula, the first feature film by the internationally acclaimed Romanian stage director Silviu Purcărete, is a provocative and expensive project (a budget of 1.6 million Euro), a dark comedy about life under communism, with graphics and visual effects.

The main set was a deserted factory area of 10,000 square meters, where a hospital set was built, as well as a cemetery, an orchard and a lake. Purcărete has used a deserted factory in staging theatre productions.

Purcărete worked with many of his collaborators from the stage: art directors Helmut Stürmer and Dragoş Buhagiar, costume designer Lia Manţoc, composer Vasile Şirli and actors Dimeny Aron, Răzvan Vasilescu, George Mihăiţă, Ilie Gheorghe, Ofelia Popii, Ioana Crăciunescu, and Marius Manole.

The film was produced by Tudor Giurgiu and Libra Film and received 25% of the budget from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro ). Purcărete's film and four other projects produced by Libra Film (www.librafilm.net ) received MEDIA Programme (http://ec.europa.eu/culture/media/index_en.htm ) development funding of 136,200 euro in 2009. Somewhere in Palilula also won the Balkan Fund Award at Thessaloniki IFF (www.filmfestival.gr ) in 2005. Medienboard (www.medienboard.de ) supported the script development of the project.

Shooting began 14 October 2009. The Romanian premiere was April 20, 2012.
