The Escape/Evadarea (working title) is a story of friendship and betrayal during the communist era, involving a mathematician (Sorin Leoveanu) who just published a paper in an American scientific magazine. Andrei Grusznicki also wrote the script. "I have to admit that the communist era fascinates me. It's my youth, the 80s were our most 'crazy' years. Beside that, the Romanian intellectual during the communist era is a rara avis in the Romanian cinema", Velvet Moraru told FNE. She was also the producer of Andrei Ujică acclaimed essay The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauşescu.
But the 80s are very demanding in a film shot today, mostly because it's difficult to find proper exteriors. The Escape is a 100% Romanian production shot on location with a budget of 700,000 EUR fully in place. The National Center for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) is supporting it with a production grant of €357,959 /1,489,109 RON, granted in its second round of 2010. Shooting is due to end 23 November. Vivi Drăgan Vasile is the DOP, and the cast includes: Ofelia Popii, Florin Piersic Jr., Virgil Ogăşanu, Marc Titieni, Dorian Boguţă, Alina Berzunţeanu, Lucian Ifrim and Mihai Călin.
The film is set to be finished at the beginning of 2013 with the premiere set for 2013.
