BUCHAREST: Mihai Ioan Kogălniceanu has been appointed acting director of the National Centre for Cinema, replacing outgoing director Eugen Şerbănescu.

The appointment was made by the Romanian Minister of Culture, Daniel Barbu.

Kogălniceanu, a counsellor for the Ministry of Culture, will take over  CNC on 7 May when Şerbănescu goes on holiday, and he continue as acting director after 1 June 2013 when Şerbănescu will officially leave, and a contest for the position can be opened, the press agency Mediafax reported.

Şerbănescu was appointed general director of CNC in 2006. He was appointed consul in Bologna in April 2013. He previously served as a general consul in Los Angeles and New York between 1998 and 2002.
After the Berlin International Film Festival, which awarded the Romanian film Child’s Pose/Poziţia copilului, by Călin Peter Netzer, Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta was approached by some directors from the New Romanian Cinema, complaining about the management of CNC and the lack of prospects for film production with continually declining money budgeted for the Cinema Fund.

Producer Anca Puiu from Mandragora was appointed counsellor of the prime minister on cinema. Soon after, Şerbănescu was appointed to the post of consul in Bologna.
