Written, shot, edited and produced by Tom Wilson through TWFilms, The Bucureşti Experiment/Experimentul Bucureşti is a "not funny at all" mockumentary "about the history of Romania, both communist and post-communist," Wilson told FNE. "Part of it is fictional, but a lot of it is also true." The film focuses on a project for experimental psychological engineering set up by the Secret Services waiting for the coup d'état in 1989.
"The Bucuresti Experiment is a film about a secret experiment that really took place in Romania - and it was shot in secret. I worked on it slowly, scene by scene, on my own, because I had no budget to produce it, and wasn't even sure if it would work. I've been lucky that once the film was finished, I was able to call on lots of friends to help with things like posters, opening sequences, and effects - things that I couldn't do myself," Wilson said.
The film was shot between August 2012 and May 2013 with a budget of 250 EUR ("The hard-disk which I sent the film to TIFF on is the greatest cost for me during production so far!" he said).
Wilson came to Romania in 1999, with only a backpack, and decided to move there in 2002 after graduating in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Oxford University. Since then he has worked as a journalist for the BBC, Time Magazine, Dazed and Confused, and The Guardian. He is now directing commercials, documentaries, and short films for various clients and agencies. His first short fictional film, Before The Fall, will be also screened at TIFF.
