Eight New Romanian Films Set for Theatrical Release this Autumn

BUCHAREST: Romanian films are starting to make major inroads into the domestic theatrical market with eight new features set for release in a crowded autumn schedule. Most of the productions were suppported primarily by the Romanian Film Center. Three are directorial feature debuts.

Răzvan Săvescu’s debut comedy, America, Here We Come!/America, venim! is a roadmovie about a group of Romanian actors touring in the USA, produced by Libra Film, and it will open on approximately 50 screens on 19 September 2014. It looks set to challenge the biggest hit of the year so far, Cristina Iacob’s debut feature #Selfie produced by MediaPro Entertainment Romania, and ZAZU Film, which has sold approximately 90,000 tickets since May 2014

Adrian Popovici’s Brâncuşi from Eternity/Brâncuşi ... pentru eternitate (http://brancusimovie.com), produced by Artis Film, is set to roll out with 17 copies on the same day with its release also on 19 September 2014.

The third debut of the autumn season, to be released on 26 September, is Andrei Gheorghe's It Takes Two to Fence/Planşa produced by DaKINO Productions and Diud Film, a love story set in the world of fencing. A week later, another debut feature will be released on 30 screens. Kiki Vasilescu's comedy/thriller Therapy for Murder/Terapie pentru crimă produced by EastMovies follows a female killer trying to make ends meet in Romania.

After an impressive festival tour, Andrei Gruzsniczki's second feature, Quod erat demonstrandum produced by ICON production will finally open domestically on 10 October. Shot in black and white on ORWO film, QED is set in the 80s, when a Romanian mathematician puts the Securitate on alert with an American publication.

On 28 November, Scurt/4: Istorii de inimă neagră, a portmaneau film with shorts made by Luiza Pârvu, Radu Jude, Andrei Creţulescu and Iulia Rugină, will open.

The season kicked off with Dan Piţa’s Kyra Kyralina on 5 September and continued with Cripta/The Crypt (Ro de Film in coproduction with France's Milonga Productions), the second movie of the Romanian-born French director Cornel Gheorghiţă, an allegorical tale about a French businessman (Serge Riaboukine) who is taken hostage. The film hit the screens on 12 September and is distributed by Paradox Film.
