Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies opened in Romania on 19 December 2014 and sold 337,000 tickets until the end of the year, thus total admissions went up from 10,142,627 on 28 November 2014 to 10,363,925 including the week between 29 December 2014 and 5 January 2015.
According to Cinemagia.ro, which publishes the weekly BO, 2014 was the best year in terms of admissions in the last 14 years and Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies was the most successful film in the last five years.
The total BO in 2014 was 41,884,606m EUR/186,386,498 RON (43,3m EUR including the week between 29 December 2014 and 5 January 2015), compared to 36.5 m EUR in 2013. Admissions and box office grew in the last four years, especially due to the boost of multiplexes. In 2014, 183 films were released in Romania, compared to 192 in 2013 and 173 in 2012.
As for domestic films, according to Cinemagia.ro, to which producers report their results, Cristina Iacob's feature debut #Selfie produced by ZAZU Film sold 102,026 tickets. In 2012, Calin Peter Netzer's Child’s Pose (Parada Film) set a record becoming the most successful Romanian film in the last 11 years with 118,392 admissions. Iacob will release a sequel to #Selfie in 2015.
Other domestic films that scored in the chart are: Răzvan Săvescu’s America, Here We Come!/America,venim! produced by Libra Film, Radu Potcoavă’s The Fathers-in-Law/Cuscrii by MediaPro Entertainment and Nae Caranfil’s Closer to the Moon produced by Mandragora Movies.
