Total admissions for European films were 876,961 in 2014 compared to 418,018 in 2013. European films cashed in approximately 3.35m EUR/ 14,757,813 RON compared to 1,462,128 EUR/ 6,433,364 RON in 2013. One explanation of this success is that the number of European premieres rose from 38 in 2013 to 47 in 2014, and also the fact that Luc Besson's Lucy alone sold 222,634 tickets.
Official results from the CNC confirm the estimations published by FNE at the beginning of 2015. Total admissions were 10,168,083 in 2014 compared to 9,048,257 in 2013, while 193 titles cashed in 42,087,537 EUR/185.185.167 RON in 2014 compared to 36,482,532 EUR/160,523,144 RON cashed in by 192 titles in 2013.
Attendance for domestic films slightly decreased from 256,594 in 2013 to 218,064 in 2014, and the domestic box office decreased accordingly from 679,148 EUR / 2,988,255 RON in 2013 to 640,599 EUR/ 2,818,639 RON in 2014. In total 24 domestic films were released in 2014 compared to 27 in 2013. Domestic films had a market share of 2.14 in 2014.
The domestic chart is topped by Cristina Iacob’s #Selfie (Zazu Film) with 87,288 admissions and 259,971 EUR/ 1,143,875 RON gross, followed by Radu Potcoavă’s The In-Laws/Cuscrii (MediaPro Entertainment) with 23,507 in attendance and 97,075 EUR /427,134 gross. Răzvan Săvescu’s America, Here We Come!/America,venim! (Libra Film) sold 18,657 and cashed in 609,029 EUR /303,728 RON according to CNC.
The most successful local distributors in 2014 were Media Pro Distribution, Forum Film Romania and Ro-Image 2000. Tickets price rose from 4.03 EUR in 2013 to 4.13 EUR in 2014.
A total of 13 feature films were produced in Romania with the support of the CNC in 2014, and six independent features films. The CNC also supported three Romanian majority coproductions and four minority coproductions, four long documentaries, two majority documentaries and also one animated minority coproduction. Four long documentaries were produced in Romania without funding from CNC, and another long documentary which is an independent majority coproduction.
