CLUJ-NAPOCA: Bogdan Mirică 's debut feature Dogs / Câini won the Transilvania Trophy at the 15th Transilvania IFF, the first and largest international feature film festival in Romania, which took place in Cluj-Napoca from 27 May to 5 June 2016.

Bulgarian actors Monika Naydenova and Alexander Benev received a Special Mention for their acting in Thirst / Jajda by Svetla Tsotsorkova. Gabriel Achim’s independent feature The Last Day / Ultima zi was awarded Best Feature Film in the Romanian Days.

Romanian Days screened 28 titles, with 11 feature films (of which six had their world premiere) and 14 short films in the competition, and three films out of the competition.

Two feature films, Sieranevada by Cristi Puiu and Dogs by Bogdan Mirică, screened shortly after their world premieres in Cannes, where Dogs was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize in Un Certain Regard.

At the workshop organised in the framework of the festival, TIFF’s director Tudor Giurgiu said that a consultation process involving the Ministry of Culture and other ministries, to include tax incentives in the new cinema law, is ongoing. According to Alex Trailă, who is a member of the Council of Administration of the the National Film Center and a counselor of the Minister of Culture, it has not been decided yet if Romania will choose a tax incentive, cash rebate or a tax shelter system.

Tax incentives will be launched by the end of 2016, the Romanian Minister of Culture Corina Șuteu announced during Cannes Film Festival. Another important change in the funding procedure, as the Ministry of Culture wants to strengthen the CNC, will be to move from the existing credit system into one with subventions.

TIFF was presented by Romanian Film Promotion and the Transilvania Film Festival Association, and was supported by the Romanian Ministry of Culture, the National Film Center, Cluj City Hall and Local Council, Romanian Cultural Institute, Creative Europe Programme – MEDIA by the European Commission.
