BUCHAREST: Ionuţ Vulpescu has been re-appointed Minister of Culture at the beginning of 2017, after the Social Democratic Party (PSD) won the parliamentary elections in November 2016. He promised that the Ministry’s budget would double and that he will continue the reforms in the film industry and the revitalisation of cinemas.

The Ministry of Culture also changed its name into the Ministry of Culture and National Identity, as one of its main goals in 2017 will be to prepare the centennial of the union of 1918, when the Romanian modern state was born.

The first mandate of Ionut Vulpescu started in December 2014 and wrapped in November 2015, when the PSD Government was replaced after public protests following a fire that broke at a rock concert in the Colectiv club in Bucharest on 30 October 2015, killing 64 young people.

Vulpescu was then replaced by Vlad Alexandrescu, who started several reforms but resigned five months later at the request of the prime minister who objected to the way he had dealt with a conflict between the dancers and the management of the National Opera in Bucharest.

The next minister of Culture, Corina Suteu, continued the reforms and managed to get a new film law approved until the end of 2016.

Born in 1976, Vulpescu graduated with a degree in Theology in Bucharest and holds an M.A. in Doctrine and Culture and a Ph.D in Philosophy.
