FESTIVALS: The 21st European Film Festival Wraps Successfully in Romania

    BUCHAREST: More than 8,000 people attended the screenings of the 21th European Film Festival in Bucharest and also in Iași, Târgu Mureș, Gura Humorului and Timișoara from 4 to 28 May 2017.

    There were more than 5,300 spectators in Bucharest in seven days, more than last year in ten days.

    One of the oldest film festivals in Bucharest, the European Film Festival had new sections, new sidebar events and, for the first time, an artistic director (Alex Trăilă). The festival ran 64 films including documentaries, biopics, dramas, comedies, animated films, thrillers and horror films, short films, experimental films and VR screenings, ranged in six sections.

    Several debates on socio-political hot topics took place including a debate around the European policy on audiovisual with Samuel Young, General Secretary of EFADs as special guest.

    This year the Audience Award was replaced with a one year subscription to the VoD service MUBI.com award for three viewers of the festival.

    The European Film Festival was organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute under the aegis of EUNIC Romania, in partnership with the European Commission Representation in Romania, with the support of embassies and cultural centres of European countries, the Romanian National Art Museum, the National Museum of the Romanian Peasant, the French Institute - Cinema Elvire Popesco, the Romanian Filmmakers Union and the European Parliament Information Office in Romania.
