Published in 1937, Scarred Hearts chronicles the life of a Romanian student suffering from spinal tuberculosis, who falls in love with another patient in a sanatorium near the French coast.
The main characters are played by Lucian Rus, Ivana Mladenovic and Ilinca Hărnuț. Marius Panduru (Aferim!) is the DoP.
Ada Solomon produced through HiFilm Production in coproduction with Germany’s Komplizen film and in association with BORD CADRE FILMS (Switzerland).
Shooting occurred in two parts in November - December 2015 and also in spring 2016. The budget was 1.1 m EUR, Ada Solomon told FNE. The project was supported by the Romanian Film Centre.
Cinema City, AdePlast SA, COVALACT, Henkel Romania, Audi România, Havas, METRO Cash & Carry România, ING Bank România, ZENITH ROMANIA, Farmacia DONA, Libra Internet Bank, CLINICA MEDICALĂ HIPOCRAT 2000 and HBO Europe were also supporting.
This is the fourth outing of Radu Jude with Solomon after The Happiest Girl In the World / Cea mai fericită fată din lume, Everybody In Our Family / Toată lumea din familia noastră and Aferim!.
Scarred Hearts had its world premiere in the Concorso internazionale of the 2016 Locarno IFF. The film was awarded the Special Jury Prize and also won the awards for art direction, make-up and costumes at the 45th edition of the Romanian Filmmakers Union (UCIN) awards, which were announced on 24 April 2017.
The film was also awarded best cinematography ex-aequo, best art direction, best costume designer and also best make-up and hair styling at the 11th Gopo Gala held in Bucharest on 21 March 2017.
