“I was pleasantly surprised to see how well Wide Management sold the film during the festival. I met the Argentine distributor and he told that he fell in love with the film, which he saw three times”, producer Liviu Mărghidan told FNE.
Proroca, which tells the story of a couple who lose their daughter in a park, was written especially for Dumitrache, who previously starred in Călin Peter Netzer's 2013 Golden Bear winner Child's Pose (Parada Film). Iulia Lumânare is co-starring. The cast includes Adela Mărghidan, Ștefan Răuș, Costin Dogioiu and Mircea Gheorghiu.
The film was lensed and produced by Mărghidan through Scharf Film & Advertising in coproduction with Lissandra Haulica through France’s Irreverence Films. The Romanian Film Centre, Eurimages, the French CNC’s Aide aux Cinémas du Monde and l’Institut Français supported the project.
“I very much believe in the universality of your film, whose story can happen anywhere anytime. Before the festival I thought that the film was maybe too long, now I know that it isn’t. We had approximately 30 positive reviews, of which only two were questioning the length of the film. I cannot wait for the Romanian release in February 2018”, Mărghidan also said.
New Story pre-bought French rights at the 2017 Cannes' Marché du Film. Other territories are in negotiations. In Romania Pororoca will be released by Bad Unicorn.
Popescu's and Mărghidan's previous credits include Portrait of the Fighter as a Young Man directed by Popescu and produced by Filmex Film, which was selected for the 2010 Berlinale Forum.
