FESTIVALS: Home and Otto the Barbarian Win WIP Awards at 10th Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest

    BUCHAREST: Radu Ciorniciuc’s documentary Home/ Acasă and Ruxandra Ghițescu’s debut feature Otto the Barbarian / Otto barbarul are the winners of the Works in Progress section at the 10th edition of the festival Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest, which wrapped on 27 October 2019. The festival initiated by Cristian Mungiu brought more than 100 films to 10 Romanian cities.

    All the 22 Romanian projects showcased in the Works in Progress section are in postproduction and were screened to representatives of Cannes, Berlin, Locarno, Karlovy Vary, Sarajevo and other festivals. Cinelab and Multimedia Est gave awards in postproduction services in the value of 10,000 EUR to Home and 5,000 EUR to Otto the Barbarian.

    Eight upcoming Romanian films screened in a special section and the Romanian Cultural Institute gave a 2,500 EUR award to Mary, Queen of Romania / Maria, Regina României by Alexis Sweet Cahill, based on the audience’s vote. The film will be theatrically released on 8 November 2019.

    The festival also hosted the second edition of a film workshop in high schools, Une Minute de Vie Une Minute de Cinéma, which wrapped with a competition. The same jury chose the winner of the Filmminute competition, but the online voting for the final award will continue till 31 October 2019.

    Claude Lelouch, Elia Suleiman, Albert Serra, Ladj Ly, Juliano Dornelles, Jasmila Zbanic, Stefan Arsenjevic, Balint Kenyeres, Nadejda Koseva, Mait Laas were among the guests of the edition.

    Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest took place in Bucharest from 18 to 27 October 2019 and is continuing in Iași, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Botoșani, Brașov, Arad, Suceava, Brăila and Slobozia through November 2019.

    Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest was initiated by Cristian Mungiu with the support of the General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival, Thierry Frémaux, and it was organised by Asociația Cinemascop and Voodoo Films in partnership with the French Embassy and l’Institut Français in Bucharest. The festival was supported by the Ministry of Culture and National Identity, the Romanian Film Centre and also by the SACD / Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs Dramatiques and the European Commission Representation Office in Romania.
