Romania nominates Police, Adjective for foreign-language Oscar

By Iulia Blaga

Corneliu Porumboiu's film Police, Adjective, recipient of the FIPRESCI Prize and Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes at Cannes, has been chosen as Romania's entry for Oscar nominations.

The film opened in Romania in early July, but had little attendance -- just 12,146 tickets, despite its prizes. It was sold in 12 territories (USA, France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Serbia, Greece, Argentina, Belgium, Luxemburg, Brazil, Columbia and Sweden), and had very good local and international reviews. Coach 14 (www.coach14.com) is the sales agent.

In his second feature Porumboiu explores the depths of cinema language, following a young police man (Dragoş Bucur) in his attempts to ease the fate of a highschool drug consumer he is supposed to reveal.

The film is produced by Marcela Ursu and 42km Film (www.42kmfilm.ro) together with Periscope Pictures, with the support of HBO Romania (www.hbo.ro) and in collaboration with Raza Studio (www.razastudio.ro) and Racova (www.racova.ro). Its 700,000 Euro budget was partly supported by a grant from National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro).
