Outbound is a 24-hour story of a young woman released for one day from prison in contemporary Bucharest. The title came from the intention to show how claustrophobic the outskirts of Bucharest are for the people living there. The working title of the film was Outskirts.
The project is based on a story written by Ioana Uricaru (Tales from the Golden Age) and Cristian Mungiu (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Tales from the Golden Age). The script was written by Tudor Voican (California Dreamin', Medal of Honour) and Apetri. The shooting took place June 29-August 3, 2009, in Bucharest. Postproduction was completed in Romania (editing) and Austria (sound editing). The DOP is Marius Panduru. The young cast includes Ana Ularu, Andi Vasluianu, Mimi Brănescu, and Ioana Flora.
Outbound is produced by Alexandru Teodorescu and Romania's Saga Film (www.sagafilm.ro). Daniel Burlac is the delegate producer. Josef Aichholzer and Aichholzer Filmproduktion Austria (www.aifilm.com) are co-producing. The film received €270,000 from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) in the summer of 2007. The project participated at the Berlinale and Sarajevo markets.
Apetri studied film direction and cinematography at Columbia University. His shorts have been selected by Clermont-Ferrand, Rotterdam and Palm Springs. He was also a Student Academy Awards nominee in 2006.
