New Romanian TV Channels Receive Licenses

    The National Audiovisual Council of Romania approved licenses for two TV stations at its 12 October 2010 meeting.

    Adevărul TV, the TV channel of the media trust Adevărul Holding (www.adevarul.ro), plans a 37 million euro investment in Romania, including headquarters in Bucharest and 40 local stations across the country. The media trust has also 40 regional offices throughout the country and plans to launch radio stations as part of an integrated media company. Some 15 million euro is investment in equipment for the 40 TV stations.

    The channel, which will broadcast general programming aimed at a wide audience, will air 24/7 via satelite with 50% original programmes. Each local station will also have its own programme. Adevărul TV is expected to earn 4.6 million euro in advertising income in its first year, 10.7 million euro in the second year and 25.8 million euro in the third year.

    Adevărul Holding is headed by Peter Imre, General Manager. Alexandru Sassu, the former general manager of Romanian public television (www.tvr.ro), is managing the radio and television division. The shareholders of Adevărul Digital Media SRL are SC Adevărul Holding with 95% and SC Tipomedia Prod SRL with 5%. Adevărul Media is controlled by the businessman Dinu Patriciu. Adevărul Trust publishes the newspapers Adevărul, Adevărul de seară, the tabloid Click!, the magazines OK!, Dilema veche, Dilemateca, Foreign Policy Romania, Forbes Romania, Tango, and the Ukrainian newspaper Blik. The international divison has offices in Spain and Italy.

    Another TV channel received a satelite licence during the same meeting from the National Audiovisual Council of Romania (www.cna.ro). România Ta (www.romaniata.ro), a news channel, will be launched on 1 December 2010 and will have 200 local stations. The channel is operated by Univers Media SRL Bucharest, a company controlled by businessman Honorius Prigoană. Vlad Ionescu is editorial managing. The channel will air 24/7, with 90% original programming.

    The 200 local stations will open gradually, starting in the major cities and expanding to towns of more than 10,000 inhabitants. The channel will be part of the media trust România Ta, which also includes radio stations, local newspapers and websites. The whole investment for the media trust is 5 million euro.
