The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauşescu Sold to Four Territories

By Iulia Blaga

The Romanian documentary The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauşescu was sold to France, Italy, Portugal and Great Britain, the film's director Andrei Ujică told FNE.

The film premiered in the 2010 Official Selection of Cannes Film Festival and was awarded with the Grand Prix of the documentary section at Bergen Film Festival in Norway, and won the Best East-European Documentary Award at the recent Jihlava Documentary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.

The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauşescu/Autobiografia lui Nicolae Ceauşescu (http://www.autobiografia.ro/) is part of a new wave in Romanian cinema. Ujică uses the expression nonfiction cinema for a film which is neither traditional documentary nor fiction. The three hours film follows the 24 years of the Nicolae Ceauşescu dictatorship conceived as a flashback and autobiography.

Ujică and the editor/sound designer Dana Bunescu searched more than 1,000 hours of official propaganda footage. Using disparate frames, they created completely new scenes to which they added no commentary. The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceauşescu is the final part off a trilogy on communism. In his previous two parts Ujică investigated the Romanian revolution of December 1989 through rough footage taken by ordinary people, and the disintegration of the USSR through the eyes of the Russian cosmonaut Sergei Krikalyov while staying in the MIR station.

The film is produced by Velvet Moraru and Icon Production, in association with the Romanian public television (http://www.tvr.ro/) and with the support of the Romanian National Centre for Cinema (http://www.cncinema.abt.ro/), Arte Vizuale Foundation Romania (http://www.fav.ro/), FG / ZKM FIMINSTITUT Karslruhe (on1.zkm.de), and also with the support of Media Partnership. The project was developed with Neue Mira Filmproduktion (http://www.neue-mira-film.de/), with the support of Nordmedia Fonds GmbH (http://www.nordmedia.de/). Mandragora International is handling the sales. The film opened in Romania 29 October 2010.
