Rotaru wrote the script three times before concentrating on the story of an apparently perfect American family with Romanian roots confronted with the arrival of an old relative from Romania. The Romanian title is Sfârşitul ploilor, while the working title in English is The End of Rain, with the alternate title My Uncle Sam also under consideration.
The film is produced by Eugen Rotaru and the Romanian company Star Media Music SRL in co-production with Rotaru and his American company IFavor Entertainment Inc. The project won a production grant of 149,000 euro (640,000 RON) from the Romanian National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro) in 2006. It also received 14,000 euro (60,000 RON) from the advertising Romanian company Mindshare Media SRL (www.mindshareworld.com). Romanian Public Television (www.tvr.ro) will support de film with 46,500 euro (200,000RON) Other advertising companies from Romania are expected and as well as private investors from the United States. The budget is $1 million (760,000 euro).
Rotaru graduated in physics from Massachussets Institute of Technology in the U.S. and went on to study film at the School of Cinematic Arts from the University of Southern California. He worked as a writer, creative executive, producer, editor, director and cinematographer. He directed two long documentaries, They Came To Play and Kids With Cameras. His third long documentary, Shakespeare High (with Kevin Spacey as executive producer) is currently in post-production.
