Admissions Double as New Screens Open

    BUCHAREST: The biggest box-office successes of 2010 in Romania drew almost double the numbers of 2009. Cinema City opened new multiplexes in 2010 in Baia Mare, Arad and a second multiplex in Bucharest. Cityplex opened a 3D screen at Constanţa.

    Avatar, which premiered in December 2009, had 626,936 admissions and box office of 3,079,270 EUR (13,240,862 RON), according to www.cinefan.ro. Alice in Wonderland took in 1,063,354 EUR (4,572,425 RON) admissions of 222,314. Inception has a slightly better admissions a 229,152 but weaker box office of 884,058 EUR (3,801,450 RON).

    In comparison, 2009's biggest hit was Ice Age: Down of the Dinosaurs with 336,176 admissions and box office of 1,613,840 EUR (6,858,821 RON), and 2008's top draw was the first 3D film screened in Romania, Journey to the Center of the Earth with 117,314 admissions and 738,362 EUR (2,658,106 RON) in box office.

    Among Romanian films, Florin Şerban's If I Want to Whisper, I Whisper/Eu când vreau să fluier, fluier topped the local chart 2010 with 55,858 admissions and box office of 202,084 EUR (868,964 RON), almost twice than the 2009 hit, the portmanteau Tales from the Golden Age - Life Is Beautiful, Comrades! by Cristian Mungiu, Ioana Uricaru, Hanno Hofer, Constantin Popescu and Răzvan Mărculescu, which had admissions of 26,520 and box office of 83,441 EUR (354,626 RON). In 2008, Sergiu Nicolaescu's The Surviver/ Supravieţuitorul was the most popular local film with an admission of 26,772 and an amount of 94,262 EUR (339,345 RON).

    151 films premiered in local cinemas in 2010, including 19 Romanian films, a drop from 2009 when 184 films premiered and 16 local films. There were 176 films in 2008, among them 12 Romanian films.
