Nicky's Family Tops Czech Doc Box Office Chart

    PRAGUE:Slovak documentaries were a hit with Czech festivals and viewers in the past year. Nicky's Family, the third and apparently last film from Slovak director Matej Minac and Slovak producer/editor Patrik Pass about the Prague-based British WWII humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton, who arranged kindertransports to evacuate Jewish children from Czechoslovakia, leads the list of domestic documentary films released in the past 12 months.

    With 32,792 admissions since its release in March, the film far outdistances any of the remaining Czech produced or coproduced films release in the past year, and in fact drew roughly the same amount of viewers as all the other 16 documentaries combined. The film won the audience award at the Karlovy Vary IFF in July 2011.

    In third place, with 5,767 viewers was Erika Hnikova's Berlinale selected film Matchmaking Mayor, which was set in a Slovak village. The film was a prize-winner at the 2010 Jihlava documentary film festival.
