The first stage of production, which began on 7 November 2012, will wrap on 12 November 2012, but 32 more days of shooting will follow in spring and summer 2013.
Based on a 1956 novel by famous Slovak writer Alfonz Bednár, this post-war drama set in the dark period of early Communism relates the story of a married doctor who plunges into an affair with a political activist.
Although A Step into Darkness takes on a historical subject, Luther says he is seeking to communicate a universal message that will intrigue a present-day audience.
“As with my previous films, I will again use the past as a means of hinting at the present and exploring issues such as human relationships or morality,“ Luther said.
The cast of well-known actors includes Marko Igonda (Confidant), Monika Haasová, Kristýna Lišková-Boková (Identity Card), Miroslav Donutil (Želary, Cosy Dens) and Marián Geišberg (The Corpse Must Die).
Photography will be in the hands of the director’s brother Igor Luther, who has worked with Andrzej Wajda, Volker Schlöndorff and Michael Haneke.
The film’s producer, Trigon Production (www.trigon-production.sk), received a grant of 201,200 EUR from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund (www.avf.sk). The budget is 1.6 m EUR.
The film will be released in 2014.
