New Czech Films US Tour 2012
In the year of its 10th anniversary celebration, the Czech Film Centre (ČFC) is significantly enriching its activities focused on continuous support and presentation of Czech cinematography, especially abroad. One key event in late spring and early summer is a US tour of current Czech films. Inspiration for this event, the biggest presentation of Czech films in North America in recent years, came from successful traveling shows that the ČFC organised in such territories as Germany and Great Britain.
From May 9, 2012 until the beginning of July, the New Czech Films US Tour 2012 will run in eight American movie theaters.
The tour will start at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in New York, where the show has taken place every year now for 12 years, in cooperation with BAM cinematheques and the Czech Centre New York.
“The screenings at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York have been very successful with audiences, and that gave us the idea to bring the show to other American cities as well,” says Markéta Šantrochová from the Czech Film Centre.
This year, for the first time, the presentation of Czech films will take place in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, Washington D.C. and Seattle. Among the films to be screened are Alois Nebel, Four Suns, Long Live The Family, Leaving, The Matchmaking Mayor, Identity Card and Walking Too Fast. Directors Radim Špaček, Tomáš Luňák and Bohdan Sláma will be on the tour and introduce their films to audiences.
All films will be screened in Czech with English subtitles. A special postcard with the actual programme will be prepared for each city, and all materials share a common visual appearance.
The tour is organised by the Czech Film Centre and curated by Irena Kovářová, who has worked on the project since its launch in 2000 in New York. Co-organisers are the Czech Centre New York; the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles, which sponsors the launch of the show in five cities on the U.S. west coast; the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington; the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Chicago; local honourary consuls in Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Seattle and Portland; and, last but not least, the host movie theatres in individual cities.
