Burning Bush, the HBO Europe miniseries directed by Agnieszka Holland, has won a Golden Nymph award at the 2013 Monte-Carlo Television Festival with Ivan Trojan named Outstanding Actor.
Directed by Agnieszka Holland from a script by Stepan Hulik, Burning Bush tells the dramatic story of Jan Palach, a young student at Charles University in Prague, who set fire to himself in January 1969, the year following the Prague Spring.
The story of his death four days later, the efforts of the communist authorities to discredit his name and the legal fight by the lawyer appointed by his family to clear his name and uncover the truth, is told in three feature-length parts. The miniseries premiered earlier this year on HBO Europe in the fifteen countries in its operating region. It is distributed internationally by Beta Film.
Antony Root, EVP Original Programming and Production, HBO Europe, said:
“This has been an outstanding two weeks for HBO Europe Original Production. We are delighted that Ivan Trojan's towering performance in Burning Bush has been recognised in Monte Carlo. We are equally happy that Bartosz Kowalski’s inspiring documentary was a triple winner in Krakow. HBO Europe is committed to working with the finest creative talents in all genres and it is wonderful to see Ivan and Bartosz’s remarkable work acknowledged in this way.”
On June 1st HBO Poland scooped three awards at the Krakow FiIm Festival for the documentary A Dream in the Making. In an appealing tale of friendship and determination, as Pawel coaches his best friend Bartek to become a film stuntman, we see the dreams of two young men reach beyond the confines of their violent and impoverished Warsaw neighbourhood.
At Krakow the Silver Hobby-Horse was awarded to Bartosz M. Kowalski as Director of the Best Documentary Film; Mateusz Skalski won the Award of the President of state broadcaster TVP for Best Cinematography; Director Bartosz M. Kowalski also won the Maciej Szumowski Award, which is made by the National Broadcasting Council in recognition of remarkable social awareness.
