March 24th -- Pawel Pawlikowski’s Ida continues its French box office tour de force exceeding 400.000 admissions. With this weekend’s 31,000 admissions, figures confirm that Ida is currently the third best selling Polish Film in France ever.
Having surpassed Andrzej Wajda's Solidarity era masterpiece Man of Iron (378.148 admissions) Idais the now the best-selling Polish film in France in the last 65 years.
In Italy (Lucky Red) Ida achieved 50.000 admissions in its second week in release.
Also a critical and commercial hit in Belgium and Switzerland alike Ida will be released in The Netherlands and Spain on March 27th and March 28th and will be in cinemas in the US , Australia and New Zealand in May.
Atthetop Polish film awards ten days ago Ida added four Polish Eagles to it's rapidly growing awards list which now stands at 32.
Ida is sold to 33 territories, including all major.
Ida is produced by Phoenix Film (DK) and Opus Film (PL) in association with Portobello Pictures (GB) and sold by Portobello Film Sales (PFS). Producers Eric Abraham, Ewa Puszczynska and Piotr Dzieciol.
Set in Communist Poland in 1962, IDA (played by newcomer Agata Trzebuchowska) centers on a young woman’s unexpected discovery of her Jewish heritage before taking vows as a Catholic nun, and the journey she must take with her aunt Wanda (Agata Kulesza) – her only living relative – to uncover her roots and confront the truth about her family.
Producer Eric Abraham said he was heartened by the response of distributors to IDA and confident that they will conclude arrangements for at least another half a dozen territories by the end of the TIFF including North America. “I am glad that Artificial Eye will release IDA. They are a class act with an unparalleled history who handled all of Pawel’s previous films and remain one of only two or three UK distributors still profoundly committed to foreign language films.”
Pawel Pawlikowski is a UK-based, BAFTA Award-winning Polish filmmaker. He began making documentaries for the BBC in the mid-1980’s, including “From Moscow to Pietushki,” “Dostoevsky’s Travels,” “Serbian Epics” and “Tripping with Zhirinovsky,” which between them won an Emmy International, Prix Italia, the Grierson and two Royal Television Society Awards. Pawlikowski previously directed three feature films, LAST RESORT, MY SUMMER OF LOVE (both of which received BAFTAs) and WOMAN IN THE FIFTH. IDA is Pawlikowski’s first Polish language film as well as his first film shot in his native Poland.
