Have you ever looked at your grandma as a woman? Have you ever thought she might somehow fall in love with you as a man? Tom Fassaert (NL) decides to face the situation by pointing his camera at it: and reveals old bitterness, frustrations and lack of healthy relationships in his family lasting several generations. For a filmmaker, personal stories are the most difficult ones to keep the distance from in order to tell an honest story to the audience. Will he be strong enough to carry on with his film and to conclude it?
For 6 months now the whole team of his film “A Family Affair” has been working on editing at the DOK.Incubator workshop to get a clear idea about the topic of the film, to design the storytelling and build strong characters – including the director himself – in the most interesting way. Beside the dramaturgy the producer has designed a personalized distribution and marketing strategy.
Now the film is close to the release and it will be presented at the widely sought out DOK.Incubator Preview – a special event organized by DOK Leipzig festival. Last year, the event was visited by more than 170 industry guests and a more than half of the presented films gained collaboration with one of the renowned sales representatives to start their careers internationally. The workshop presents here a collection of nine high-end cinematic films here, suitable for international festivals, theatrical and TV release – just before their premiere.
However, Tom’s film is not the only intimate, disturbing, controversial project from DOK.Incubator Workshop 2014. “Always Together” (CZ) tells the story of a dream of ideal family life that just went too far. If your father decides for you to live without any civilisation – do you dare to refuse? „The Beekeeper and His Son“ (CA, CH) is an intimate insight into a Chinese rural family and their struggle between traditional manner and the dreams of the young generation.
A tragicomic, vibrant and emotional story of one mother’s fight against the global sugar mafia “Sugar Blog” (CZ); the first docu-musical, a story of a deaf girl from an illegal Roma settling, who escapes the reality into the Bollywood world “Queen of Silence” (PL, DE); an intimate portray of a young rebel in desperate need of a lacking, supportive father in “Drifter” (HU); old family secret to be told before it’s too late in “Between Sisters” (IT, BE); and a test if even boys, always having been spoiled, would become men, when facing reality of the war – in “Game Over” (ES, DE). DOK.Incubator collection is promising.
A half of the projects start already at the big fall festivals. The Leipzig presentation on 29th October (10:00) at the Leipziger Pfeffermühle Kabarett will therefore be one of the last opportunities to meet the filmmakers and have a look on the projects just before they will be released!
