Background talks in Brussels
CICAE is in continuous contact with representatives of the audiovisual sector and the European Parliament to discuss measures to be taken in support of cinemas, especially in these times of crisis.
Last Thursday, July 9, Christian Bräuer had a meeting with Niklas Nienaß, representative of the Green Group in the European Parliament, to discuss initiatives in favour of the cultural sector.
Moreover, CICAE is in constant dialogue with Europa Cinemas on the actions to be taken at political level so that cinemas remain at the centre of the discussion and so that European funds to be allocated to cinema exhibition are not reduced.
CICAE signs joint statement on „Investing in Europe’s Next generation by investing in culture“
“As the European economy is slowly restarting, it is far from business as usual. Cultural actors are gradually resuming their activities, but all have to implement strict safety rules which means they won’t be operating at full capacity for the foreseeable future and are therefore facing challenging economic decisions. From individual creators and creative workers all the way to big production and media companies, the whole value chain is impacted.”
CICAE is one of the 99 European cultural and creative industry organisations to have signed a Joint Declaration calling on Member States and the European Parliament to bring EU support for the sector to a level commensurate with its contribution to the EU economy and the well-being of its citizens.
In particular, the requests aim at this objective:
- To push for a substantial increase in the budget of Creative Europe, following the European Parliament's proposal for a budget of €2.8 billion.
- To ensure that the whole sector can adequately benefit from the various instruments of the Recovery Plan.

German federal president Steinmeier at the German cinema’s reopening on July 2
After 109 days of closure and intensive preparation, Berlin's cinemas opened on July 2, and with them most of the movie theaters throughout the country. German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender were guests at the Delphi Filmpalast, where Christian Petzold's UNDINE was shown on the long-awaited (unofficial) launch day for the entire industry.
A few weeks ago, Steinmeier and his wife had announced that they would also support the reopening of the cinemas. They implemented this plan on the very day of the reopening and took a seat in the Delphi Filmpalast together with Christian Bräuer (CICAE president and CEO of Yorck Kinogruppe), Hans-Christian Boese (Piffl Medien), actress Paula Beer and director Christian Petzold.
Christian Bräuer took the opportunity to thank the audience for all the expressions of solidarity during the last weeks and the Berlin Senate, the Medienboard and the Minister of State for Culture for the fast and unbureaucratic help. Above all he thanked the Federal President for his strong voice for culture.
The screening made it clear what the cinemas will have to deal with in the coming weeks. Of the regular 673 seats, 150 were occupied that evening. Against this background, Arne Höhne (Piffl Medien) stressed that the crisis would be sustainable, and that cinema operators and distributors would have to be very 'careful' with each other in the coming weeks and months. It is elementary to come to more economic conditions, as they also apply in other countries.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR CINEMAS
Few weeks left to apply for "Cinemas as Innovation Hubs for Local Communities"
The European Commission has published a second call for proposals for "Cinemas as Innovation Hubs for Local Communities" with a deadline on August 7: https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/en/news/preparatory-action-cinemas-innovation-hubs-local-communities
This pilot action is a precursor of developments planned for the next Creative Europe 2021-2027 program, which is currently under negotiation.
Compared to last year, this second call considers the post-COVID-19 impact and reinforces in particular the European cooperation dimensions of cinemas not only towards cultural organizations, but also towards VOD platforms and new technologies.
