Director's Statement
I’m not one for genre film and I have very little interest in the markets, but somehow this film led me on a collision course with both. For all the vampiric bloodletting, I felt like the mosquito, man’s deadliest enemy, was thoroughly unexplored in film and, after reading Michael Lewis’ Flash Boys, I became fascinated by those hidden away “quants” who made high-frequency trading go.
2007 was the year I moved to Los Angeles. It now feels ancient, but also strangely immediate. Many cultural events have fused with post Y2K banality, but I still recall holding that first-gen iPhone as if it were my first born.
In addition to the iPhone, the first week of August saw Barry Bonds break baseball’s all-time home run record, Rupert Murdock purchase the Wall Street Journal, The Apprentice with Donald Trump enter its fifth season, author Nassim Taleb appear on Charlie Rose to discuss his book Black Swan, a young senator named Barak Obama speak of divisiveness at the Democratic Presidential Debate, and BNP Paribas cite “a complete evaporation of liquidity,” kicking off the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression. Canaries in coal mines and mosquitos in the streets.
Bio
Filip Jan Rymsza (29 December 1977, Olecko, Poland)
Los Angeles-based, Polish-born filmmaker best known for completing Orson Welles’ final film, THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND, which had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival. In addition to MOSQUITO STATE, he's also presenting HOPPER/WELLES; an intimate 1970 conversation between film giants, Dennis Hopper, riding high on the massive success of EASY RIDER, and Orson Welles, ever the iconoclast and offscreen interviewer. Filip founded and manages Royal Road Entertainment, a Los Angeles, Luxembourg and Warsaw-based production company.
