After 11 years of experience this workshop promises to get the best of your film and help you start its career. In 2022 films which took part in previous workshop editions travelled around the world to compete at festivals, receive awards and to connect with their audience. Four of these films were selected for IDFA, including two world premieres, three films premiered at CPH:DOX, some of them competed at Nordisk Panorama, DOK Leipzig, Hot Docs and many more great festivals.
“Last year was full of great success for the films we worked with. For example, The Pawnshop by Łukasz Kowalski (dok.incubator INT 2020) became a huge hit being screened at more than 30 festivals which is amazing,” says Andrea Prenghyová, the director of dok.incubator. She adds: “I am sure that the films we selected for the last year’s edition will follow similar paths. Light Falls Vertical by Efthymia Zymvragaki (dok.incubator INT 2022) premiered at IDFA in October and I already know that some other documentaries from this workshop will start the 2023 season at big festivals.”
For the 2023 workshop, dok.incubator will select eight documentaries that will take part in three residential sessions (April, June and October). Each session focuses on different parts of the process and is very practical, meaning that you learn everything by applying it to your own film, for example coming up with your actual marketing and distribution plan.
Who will you work with?
The tutors of the workshops are people from the industry, very experienced producers, marketers, and editors who themselves regularly have films at top festivals. It is their practical experience that is crucial for the success of the workshop.
Besides that, the workshop cooperates with prestigious festivals in Europe and America, and selectors from Sundance, Tribeca, Hot Docs, IDFA or Berlinale often come to the sessions to look out for films for their competitions, because it is a guarantee of quality for them. “I joined dok.incubator because I wanted to see the projects that are coming up. It is a rare opportunity for programmers to be able to give really detailed advice and feedback on projects,” says Basil Tsiokos, a senior programmer at Sundance. At the same time, dok.incubator works with the people who help to market and distribute films, the sales agents, which is a great benefit for the workshop participants.
