Jihlava IDFF 2009 - Archive titbits and other news

    Dear friends of documentary,

(see the links to press releases at the end of each article)

Translucent Being Georges Rouquier - almost forgotten master of rural studies

The Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival 2009 will present almost forgotten personality of the French documentary - Georges Rouquier in the retrospective section Translucent Beings.

Author´s method, connecting long-term documentary with mise-en-scened procedures, strongly influenced wide range of film makers in the „cinéma vérité" tradition. But he is practically unknown to the audience of these days. Neverthless, an extensive retrospective opening in the French film library Cinématheque française in November proves his key position in the history of the documentary cinema. The press release is available here.

Film und Foto exhibition 1929 retrospective - cult silent film avant-garde in Jihlava

The Fascinations section presents also the non-competition blocks besides the competition part. One of non-competition parts of this year's Fascinations will be the retrospective of the Stuttgart Film und Foto exhibition (FiFo) from 1929. FiFo was not only the first film festival in the modern sense (although the title "film festival" was first used for Venice event three years later) but also the exhaustive avant-garde presentation of the era (about 1200 works by more than 200 artists). The profile will commemorate fundamental films by Man Ray, Joris Ivens, René Clair or Hans Richter. Legendary films, seldom shown on the big screen however, will be screened by Jihlava IDFF in the best available quality. See the press release here.

A trolleybus in the festival colours on streets of the city of Jihlava!

One of the most important parts of yearly festival promotion was presented in Jihlava: a trolleybus endued with this year´s graphic design by well-known Czech designer Juraj Horváth is going to carry passengers in Jihlava untill November 15. For more information see our web site.

Doc Alliance Films - Discovering the Culture of the Far East

Almost 300 documentary films are available for download at the docalliancefilms.com portal. It frequently represents the only space where these films can live a life of their own, addressing their audiences. For many of us, documentaries are the only gate of knowledge of other cultures, customs and human values.

By means of simple animation of popular stories, the Hungarian film A Guest of Life (Az élet vendége - Csoma-legendárium) by Tibor Szemző introduces us to the significant mediator of the Buddhist culture Alexander Csoma de Körös (1784-1842) who went to Tibet to look for the roots of the Hungarian language and stayed there for the next 20 years. The film is an authorial meditation, a pilgrimage under the sign of poetry and religion.

The image of the Far East is also presented by the new film of the week, Indian film Laxmi at the Gate by director Anal Shah. The author retells the legend of his native city Ahmedabad about the goddess of wealth Laxmi and her presence in the city.

East European Forum received 77 applications from 24 countries!

The authors of eight to ten most promising projects will be given an opportunity to pitch their documentary project to potential co-production partners representing major European and North American broadcasters.
