11th New Horizons IFF

    Hungarian Success at New Horizons IFF

    WROCLAW: The Grand Prix of the 11th New Horizons IFF (www.nowehorizonty.pl) and 20,000 euros went to Attenberg (Greece 2010) directed by Athina Rachel Tsangari. Sándor Kardos's Gravedigger (A sírásó, Hungary 2010) received the jury's special mention along with the FIPRESCI award.

    Some 110,000 spectators attended the festival, which has become one of the largest film events in CEE. They included 157 foreign film directors, actors, producers, sales agents and distributors and 241 Polish guests, among them, the Hungarian director Béla Tarr who presented his last film The Turin Horse and gave a masterclass.

    11th IFF New Horizons Opens

    WROCLAW: The 11th New Horizons Film Festival www.nowehoryzonty.pl (21-31 July 2011) opened with Berlinale winner Nader And Simin, A Separation by Asghar Farhadi and Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Once Upon a Time in Anatolia.

    The closing film is Pedro Almodovar's The skin I Live In. Around 430 films (including 230 feature films) from over 50 countries will be shown in Wroclaw during the event. The festival audience and international juries, among them Frédéric Boyer, Anocha Suwichakornpong, Denis Côté and Dimitris Eipides, will award 70,000 Euros in prizes in five competitions and distribution guarantees to at least four feature-length films.

    Ten Projects Selected for Polsh-Norwegian Coproduction Forum

    WROCLAW: Five Polish film projects and five Norwegian film projects have been chosen to participate in the Polish-Norwegian Co-production Forum, taking place 26-28 July 2011 during the 11th New Horizons IFF in Wrocław, Poland.

    Eighty participants from both countries have been confirmed. They include producers Opus Film, Storm Studios, Maipo, and Prasa i Film; sales agents Trust Nordisk; distributors Gutek Film, Best Film, and Vivarto; and buyers from Polsat, TVP and Canal+ Poland.

    The event will include both pitching to a group and one-to-one meeting sessions. Case studies of Essential Killing and King of Devil's Island - two recent successful Polish-Norwegian co-productions - will also take place during the Forum.

    FNE at New Horizons: Separation to Open Festival

    The winner of the 2011 Golden Bear in Berlin, Nader And Simin, A Separation by Asghar Farhadi will open the Wrocław-based New Horizons (www.nowehoryzonty.pl) film festival on the 21 July 2011.

    The second opening film will be Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. The closing film on the 31 July will be Pedro Almodovar's latest movie The skin I live In.

    Among the confirmed guests are Terry Gilliam, Kim Ki-Duk and Bruno Dumont.

    All three competitions of the festival are looking strong this year with titles such as Urszula Antoniak's Code Blue, Paula Markovitch's El Premio and Nanouk Leopold's Brownian Movement in the main, New Horizons International Competition and Kim Ki-Duk's Arirang and Marie Losier's The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye, among others, in the Films on Art International Competition.

    The New Polish Films competition will see the world premiere of Wilhelm Sasnal's It Looks Pretty from a Distance. Sasnal is a world-famous contemporary artist, whose works are in collections of the Saatchi Gallery and Tate Modern in London.

    FESTIVALS: Name Change for Era New Horizons

    WARSAW: Heading into its 11th edition, the Wroclav film festival Era New Horizons is shortening its name to New Horizons to reflect the name change of its major sponsor.

    The festival takes place 21-31 July 2012, with 230 feature films and a total of 430 films representing 50 countries screening to an anticipated 120,000 visitors.

    Apart from the competition sections, the highlights of this year's edition will be a presentation of Norwegian cinema and cult films, as well as retrospectives of Terry Gilliam, Bruno Dumont, Andrzej Munk and Mariusz Wilczyński.

    The sponsor, formerly the Era mobile phone company, is now part of the T-Mobile brand. The festival's new website is http://www.filmneweurope.com
