The month of February was busy for the Slovenian cinema with two big and important festival gatherings, such as Rotterdam and Berlinale. In both cases, the presence reaped success in the form of the awards. The echoes of the latter continue to resound in March, with the Slovenian premiere and the start of distribution of Urška Djukić’s Little Trouble Girls. Also, at the beginning of March, the Slovenian minority co-production short film The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent (directed by Nebojša Slijepčević) concluded its award season with winning the César, but unfortunately not being ultimately crowned with the Oscar in its category. 

One of the most prominent film events in the Baltics – the Riga International Film Festival (RIGA IFF, 16–26 October) – has opened the application process for the four competitions in its 12th season, as ever relentlessly highlighting distinctive and innovative cinema. Until 30 June, applications are open for feature films competing for the main prize of the festival, short films by Latvian authors, as well as music videos from across the Baltics. The Croatian Audiovisual Centre distributed 496,500 EUR for 11 minority coproductions on 17 March 2025.

In the first meeting of 2025, German Films „Distribution Support" awards committee decided to support 36 foreign theatrical releases of German films. In total 266,900 Euro were allocated.

Supporting the Development of Animated Films: Key Challenges and Opportunities

The CEE Animation Conference GO! 2025 brought together independent animated film producers, public film fund representatives, creatives and other industry professionals for three days of discussions on Green Animation and the establishment of an International Co-development Support Mechanism. Held in the countryside connecting Nova Gorica–Gorizia, the European Capital of Culture 2025, the conference concluded with action plans addressing both subjects.

Baltic Sea Docs, the leading documentary co-production pitching event in the Baltic region, is now accepting project submissions for its 29th edition, taking place on 31 August – 5 September 2025 in Riga, Latvia. The call for projects is open until 9 May.

The Estonian Ida-Viru Investment Agency Foundation and Mapri Ehitus signed an agreement according to which next year, Jõhvi will receive a film campus, or multimedia and creative industry incubator. The cost of the campus, which will be built with the support of the Just Transition Fund, is 16 million euros. Signing the contract was filmed Tenet-style upside down.
