Highlights beyond the cinema auditoriums and film hits: the goEast Specials and Highlights 2014

About the beginning of football in Georgia, the cinematic country of Slovakia and The End of Punk in Helsinki: the goEast Specials
Beyond the Competition and the themed sections, goEast offers a multi-faceted and extensive programme. This year’s matinee promises to be a special event, with Christian Schwochow‘s current film WEST for which Julia Franck’s novel “Lagerfeuer” was adapted for the screenplay. Schwochow, who already achieved great critical and popular success with NOVEMBERKIND and CRACKS IN THE SHELL, also received attention for his television version of Uwe Tellkamp’s novel THE TOWER. In addition to lead actress Jördis Triebel, WEST also features Tristan Göbel (GOETHE) and Alexander Scheer (SUN ALLEY) in further roles.
In cooperation with the Slovak Film Institute, goEast shifts the focus to the cinematic country of Slovakia and presents five Slovak feature films as well as a short film programme. At the panel discussion “Slovak Cinema Now” on Monday, 14 April at 4 pm, experts and producers will examine the various streams in Slovak cinema and the societal, political and social influences that confront filmmakers and the national film industry.
There will be a screening of the charming, bizarre comedy FIRST SWALLOW (USSR 1975, director: Nana Mchedlidze) at goEast on Saturday, 12 April at 8 pm as an early introduction to the World Cup in Brazil – and the attendees can themselves become active at the table football tournament that follows in the festival center!
An additional highlight is the reading by the Czech bestseller author Jaroslav Rudiš. He has been familiar to fans of Central and Eastern European cinema since the remarkable film version of his graphic novel ALOIS NEBEL from the year 2013. He will be reading from his fourth novel “The End of Punk in Helsinki” on Thursday, 10 April at 7:30 pm at the House of Literature “Villa Clementine”.
Of course goEast will live up to its reputation by once again offering opportunities for extensive celebration: at the legendary goEast Festivalparty on Friday, 11 April, starting at 11 pm, “Baltic Balkan” and “Schwarzmeer BBQ” will heat up the party people in the Schlachthof location, followed by the big finale at the closing party with the band Zaitsa and DJ I Can’t Dance.
Mainstream and Public’s Darlings from East Europe: the goEast Highlights
This year the section Highlights collects three cinematic genre treats that have drawn numerous viewers in Poland, the Czech Republic and Estonia: the life story of a physically disabled person who fights for a better life, a crime thriller focused on a mafia boss without scruple, and the love story of a shy postwoman and a drunkard.
