12th IDFF Jihlava 2008 – Day Three

On Sunday morning, festival viewers could watch the documentary Loose Change: Second Edition by Dylan Avery and learn about the alternative interpretation of the events of 9/11. The presentation of new film projects at the Panel of Upcoming European Documentaries was held in the afternoon, presenting for instance the film Radar - Czech Peace by Vít Klusák and Filip Remunda, mapping the opinion of the wide public on the placement of the American military base in the Czech Republic. The authorial reading of the autobiographical book Rok kohouta / Year of the Cock by journalist and writer Tereza Boučková was held in the Vinová wine bar in the evening. As for the main screening time, viewers were to decide between the Darkroom, introducing photographs by Eric Rondepierre, followed by the film Must Read after My Death by Morgan Dews, and Rapublic by Pavel Abrhám. In the film, rappers of the Czech hip hop scene are confronted by a linguist, chanson singer Hana Hegerová and others, discussing the language and its neologisms. Those who were not afraid of the cold made it to the tent in Tyršovy sady to witness the improvised cabaret of the VOSTO5 Theater.

On Monday, the last film from the Wag the 9/11 Dog? section will be screened, followed by a discussion on this theme. Those interested in experimental film can get fascinated by two international blocks and one block devoted to Czech experimental documentaries. The fourth part of the Fascinations section will offer for example the film Vertigo Rush by Austrian director Johann Lurf, based on swift movements of the camera arousing feelings of nausea. In Under Construction, Zhenchen Liu presents a formally remarkable study of the demolition process of the historical parts of Shanghai. After the one but last part of the Darkroom, the film Gyumri by Jana Ševčíková will be introduced, telling the story of survivors of the devastating earthquake which struck the Armenian town Gyumri ten years ago. The film Loss Is to Be Expected by Ulrich Seidl will be one of the last films to be screened, illustrating Seidl's "stage-managed documentarity" technique on the stories of two young people; one of them redirecting his life from East to West, the other one in the opposite direction; both of them, however, finding nothing but the same decay and human misery.

Successful Projects on Second Day of EEF Pitching

Ten projects pitched on the 2nd day of the East European Forum pitch sessions have again raised a lot of interest among the attending commissioning editors. According to their feedback, the following 3 documentary projects seem to be the most successful so far: the Estonian-Ukrainian The Pit by Marianna Kaat and Olena Fetisova; the Latvian-Estonian 15 Young by Young by Dzintars Dreibergs and Ilona Bicevska; and Poland's The Last Day of Summer by Piotr Stasik and Agnieszka Nowak. Other projects will also take part in negotiations regarding co-production or prebuy options. IDF will provide follow-up support to all 24 projects of this year's EEF.
