The script written by fashion photographer Ivan Markov together with Dimitar Kozev-Shosho follows two teenage half sisters, Iva and Maya, as they grow up and discover life. They have to find answers to difficult questions and make important decisions. Kozev told the Bulgarian press that he believed “it was never too late to live a happy childhood” and that “people grow through their losses”.
The film was produced by Spotlight in coproduction with Bulgaria’s Nova Television. The Bulgarian National Film Center gave the project a production grant of 190,000 EUR in 2014.
Young Alexandra Kostova and Radina Borshosh play the two sisters, while the acclaimed Julian Vergov plays their father. The four weeks shoot during the summer of 2015 included street locations, Sofia underground and popular places like the Zoological Garden and the main public garden, Borisova gradina. Аlexander Stanishev (TV series Glass Home, bTV) is the DoP.
An active English translator, Dimirat Kozev became famous in 2011 with his extremely low budget urban comedy Lora from Morning Till Evening, shot with a Canon 7D and produced by Spotlight. He also co-directed The Fourth Estate (2013), a TV series produced by the Bulgarian National Television.
The premiere of Monkey took place during the 20th Sofia International Film Fest, where the film grabbed the Audience Award. Bulgaria’s Lenta will start its domestic distribution on 30 September 2016.
