The 77-minute documentary in the Cypriot dialect of Greek, with English subtitles, is part of a larger project under the same name, based at Wolfson College, University of Oxford. Its director and producer Dr. Nicoletta Demetriou completed the documentary in order to “capture the fiddler’s culture that is now gone in Cyprus.”
The Cypriot Fiddler follows fiddlers from both north and south of the buffer zone and was mainly shot in June and October of 2015. Some footage from early 2006 was also added. There is no production company behind the project and its budget of 1,550 EUR was raised through a crowd-sourcing campaign on Kickstarter.
Over the next two years the documentary will be screened at academic conferences and seminars in Cyprus, the UK and other countries, and will also be shown in cultural venues across Cyprus.
