In the Shadow Dominates Czech Critics Awards

    PRAGUE: David Ondříček’s impressive and moving historical drama set in the dark Stalinist days of the early 1950’s In the Shadow took five awards at the third annual Czech Film Critics Awards on 26 January 2013.

    In the Shadow won Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography (Adam Sikora), Best Music (Jan P. Muchow, Michal Novinski), and Best Actor for what could be called a career best performance by Ivan Trojan. The film was produced by Ondříček’s company Lucky Man Films and Hollywood-based Bleiberg Entertainment and coproduced by Slovakia’s Trigon Production.

    Bohdan Sláma’s dark comedy Four Suns (www.negative.cz) won two prizes: the Best Screenplay award for Sláma and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Klára Melíšková.

    Láska v hrobě produced by Yekot Film and directed by David Vondráček won the Best Documentary award. The Discovery of the Year Award went to Prague-based Slovene film director Olmo Omerzu.

    The remaining two awards went to Gabriela Míčová, Best Actress for Jan Hřebejk’s Garbage, the City and Death (www.cestimir.cz) and Ondřej Vetchý, Best Supporting Actor for Sunday League (www.mediapropictures.cz).

    The Czech film awards season continues with the unveiling of the nominations for the Czech Lions on 2 February.
