Film New Europe has teamed up with the upcoming Cannes Marche Du Film and the Producers Workshop to promote Central and Eastern European producers during Cannes.

Workshop participant Jan Hlubek is a member of Barrandov’s sales team, and he also contributes as project evaluation consultant to the company’s coproduction strategy.

Hlubek graduated in film studies at the Charles University in Prague (with a thesis on the international film festivals circuit) and he also studied film in Paris. He entered the film industry in 2007 as a freelance journalist. In the same year he joined the PR and marketing department of Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, becoming its head of communication in 2008. After working with other festivals as communications manager or in other positions, he joined Barrandov Studios as marketing manager in 2010.

Since 2013 he has been head of marketing at the company, in charge of the marketing strategy planning, communication and CRM projects. As a member of the studio’s sales team Hlubek specializes in the tax incentives and other Czech Republic soft money potential for incoming producers. As an enthusiast of alternative rock-music, he also co-runs a promo agency and record label in Prague.

He told FNE that in Cannes he expects to be “getting the latest updates on the film financing opportunities in the international film industry, a better understanding on how a film market event such as Marché du film functions, and presenting the company as the leading and reliable partner for the production in the Czech Republic.”

Barrandov is currently providing services for The Shamer´s Daughter, a Danish fantasy/adventure film based on the first book of Lene Kaaberbol (Nepenthe Film in co-operation with Nordisk Film Distribution), Philipp Kadelbach’s Nackt unter Wölfen for UFA Fiction and the new season of BBC´s The Musketeers. The debut feature of Czech filmmakers Tomas Weinreb and Petr Kazda, the psychological thriller I, Olga Hepnarova is currently in the physical production stage. The film is produced through Black Balance, in coproduction with MediaBrigade (Poland), ALEF Film & Media Group (Slovakia), Barandov Studios, ACE Prague, and FAMU film school. Petr Jákl’s historical epic Warrior of God, a coproduction between J.B.J. Film – Petr Jákl and Barrandov Studios is in development.

Most of Barrandov’s foreign coproduction partners come from Germany, Poland, Slovakia and the Scandinavian countries. Its latest coproductions are David Ondricek’s In the Shadow (Czech Republic-Slovakia-Poland-Israel, Lucky Man Film, Centrala Film, Trigon Production, Bleiberg Entertainment, United King Films together with RWE, Barrandov Studio and Avion Film), Milan Cieslar’s Colette (Czech Republic-Slovakia, Happy Celluloid and Wandal Production) and Andrea Sedlackova’s Fair Play (Czech Republic-Slovakia-Germany, Negativ, Arina Film, Ceska Televize, Barrandov Studios and Deoartyre Films). Fair Play is being presented at Marché du film this year.

Hlubek told FNE that what he enjoys the most in his work is “feeling that I am part of the strong executive team on amazing projects in our studios,” but he also likes “the moment when you receive an invitation to the wrap party because you know it means everything went well!”
