Czech cinema in Cannes 2014

    We are proud to inform you that the Czech Film Center will be again attending this year´s Cannes IFF.

    As usual, we will share our pavilion No. 133 in the Village International with our Slovak colleagues.

    Czech cinema will be represented by a new film of Petr Vaclav, The Way Out, that will be screened in ACID section on

    The Way Out tells a story of a young Romani couple and their efforts to live a decent and dignified life against the “Romani social trap”: racism, the society’s prejudices, exclusion from opportunities to obtain legal work, the lack of necessary qualifications, difficult communication with officials, debts and the miserable life conditions connected with the environment, lifestyle and traditional values of the ethnicity.

    Petr Vaclav has been involved in social subjects from the beginning of his career. His debut Marian about a Romani boy living all his life in reform centers has received numerous domestic and international awards, including Silver Leopard and FIPRESCI prize at Locarno IFF in 1996.

    The latest film of Andrea Sedlackova FAIR PLAY will be also introduced at the market.

    The story of Fair Play takes place in Prague 1983. The eighteen-year-old sprinter Anna, a top athlete, is placed on the Programme of “Specialized Care”. She only finds out that she is being doped after some months, by accident. Anna refuses the doping, but her mother Irena decides to keep her daughter on doping without her knowledge in order to allow her the chance to run in the Olympic Games and emigrate.

    Czech Film Center prepared a works in progress screening within the market:

    Nowhere in Moravia by Miroslav Krobot is a fun village drama about two sisters looking for love in a sleepy hollow somewhere in the mountains of Moravia, while US2 by Slobodanka Radun is a modern love story about a lost girl, a gay hairdresser and their united attempts to escape the constraints of their own desires. Radim Spacek´s Places is a story about love and loss and about innocence abruptly replaced with the adult emotions of guilt, fear and revenge and Children by Jaro Vojtek reflects the social situation in today´s Slovakia and shows the influence of personal failure and frustration on the closest relationships.
