Vera Dreams of the Sea wins Main Award at International MIDPOINT Programme

    PRAGUE: The fifth MIDPOINT educational programme aimed at supporting talent and development in European screenwriting, culminated at Prague's FAMU film school the final weekend of August 2014 with honours for two best projects.

    The final presentation of nine feature film projects and eight short film projects was followed bythe awarding of two financial prizes: EUR 1,500 for the creators of the best feature-film project went to Vera Dreams of the Sea produced and directed by Kaltrina Krasniqi and written by Doruntina Basha from Prishtina (Kosovo); and EUR 1,500 for the best short film project was divided between Buni and Claudiu by the students of Romanian UNATC Daria Nistor, Dan Stoian and Constantin Radu Vasile, and Why We Believe by the students of Slovak film school VŠMU Martin Hnát and Zuzana Bartošová.

    Vera Dreams of the Sea is the story of three women connected by a similar fate, a tragedy which happened 30 years ago. Their struggle with the consequences of the past offence against them takes place on the background of a strongly patriarchal society. Kaltrina Krasniqi graduated in film directing in Prishtina and runs a production company Dit´ e Nat´. This is her first feature. Doruntina Basha is a screenwriter and an award-winning playwright.

    Many internationally recognized film industry professionals were present at the Prague FAMU event, including Gyula Gazdag, the director of Sundance Directors Lab; Bernd Buder, programme director of coproduction film market Connecting Cottbus; Satu Elo from EAVE programme; Arne Kohlweyer from Berlinale Talents; and Marge Liiske, director of Baltic Event, the largest co-production forum in the North-East Europe region.

    MIDPOINT programme, underscoring the importance of the screenwriter-producer creative tandem, is designed for teams with scripts open for further development. It takes place in cooperation with experienced international experts. Film projects which have gone through the programme have been screened at festivals been released in cinemas. The most recent example is the debut feature by Burmese native writer Aung Min, The Monk (directed by The Maw Naing) which was screened at the Forum of Independents at the 2014 Karlovy Vary IFF.
