FNE at Jihlava IDFF 2016: Slovakia Shines at 20th Anniversary Festival

By

JIHLAVA: When Jihlava was launched by a young film buff 20 years ago, Slovakia’s film industry was struggling. This year, Slovak documentary filmmakers will have a prominent place in the Industry Programme of the 20th Jihlava IDDF, which opens on 25 October 2016.

The Industry Programme kicks off with a welcome drink hosted by the Slovak Film Institute and wraps with a case study presented by three Slovak producers and directors: Peter Kerekes, Marek Sulik and Martin Kollar.

Visegrad meetings retain an important spot, with representatives of the national film institutes addressing their approaches to documentary film, and a second meeting on Central European cultural identity.

Emerging Producers, which has itself emerged as the must-attend pro event of the festival, receives a coveted evening slot, concluding with the presentation of the Silver Eye Awards to the best documentaries in the East Silver Market.

The festival will have a spotlight related to the current US national elections, with its own poll on the election, with the results to be announced at the festival’s closing ceremony.

The festival also announced the recipient of the Contribution to World Cinema Award, Czech director and screenwriter Drahomira Vihanova, who turned to documentary filmmaking after her first fiction feature film was banned in 1969.
