This Czech/Slovak/Danish coproduction returns to the wartime childhood of the director’s father, Zdeněk Svěrák, and is a prequel to another extremely popular film of the Svěráks’, Elementary School / Obecná škola (1991, Barrandov Film Studio).
Barefoot tells the story of eight-year-old Eda, a long-desired and anxiously protected child of parents who had previously lost one baby. After his father refuses to cooperate with the Nazi invaders of Czechoslovakia in 1939, the family is forced to leave Prague and spend the war years living with relatives in the countryside. The war provides mysterious adventures for Eda, whose childish eyes cannot perceive the danger of those difficult times.
Barefoot was very popular in domestic cinemas last year, reaching 505,282 admissions and the third position in the top ten chart.
The film produced by Biograf Jan Svěrák and coproduced by Česká televize, innogy, Phoenix Film, Novinski, RTVS and Barrandos Studio, was supported by the Czech Film Fund.
