Revenues from DVD sales amounted to 672 million crowns (€26.7 million), nearly 21% more than 2006. "While the years 2005 and 2006 provided stagnant or lower sales, last year sales in DVD retail stores increased surprisingly," says Pavel Borowiec, director of DVD Group.cz.
Contributing to the rise of sales is the DVD release of domestic smash hits such as Empties by director Jan Svěrák and I Served the King of England by Jiří Menzel, both handled by DVD distributor Magic Box (www.magicbox.cz).
In addition, the DVD release of popular Hollywood sequels attracted Czech attention last year. Among the DVD bestsellers were Shrek the Third (distributed by Bontonfilm, www.bontonfilm.cz ), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World´s End (distributed by Forum Home Entertainment) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (distributed by Magic Box).
