BUDAPEST: Benedict Cumberbatch is starring in a six-part limited series called Eric, created by Abi Morgan. The Netflix production is currently shooting in Hungary with local company Mid Atlantic Films servicing, and it is benefiting from the Hungarian tax incentives scheme.

Recently, Benedict Cumberbatch made the local headlines when he visited the Hungarian State Opera and watched Don Quijote performed by the Hungarian National Ballet. He stood up to applaud the artists, and personally congratulated the company after the performance, as the State Opera wrote in a Facebook post.

Filming for the series is now underway in Hungary and in New York, and several locations in Budapest are used as a double for New York.

Other important roles are played by Gaby Hoffmann, McKinley Belcher III, Dan Fogler, Clarke Peters, Ivan Morris Howe, Phoebe Nichols and David Denman.

The series, which has been described as a taut thriller and a portrait of a delusional father, is set in New York in the 80s. Cumberbatch plays Vincent, a leading puppeteer and a desperate father whose 9 year old son Edgar disappears on the way to school. As the search doesn't bring results, Vincent becomes more frustrated and destructive, and his unstable mind is fuelled by his self-loathing and guilt.

Eric is set to be released in 2024.

Hungary is a popular location for Netflix shows; the first two seasons of Shadow and Bone, and Shawn Levy’s mini-series All the Light We Cannot See have been shot there, among others.
