Lithuanian Domestic Film Market on the Rise

    VILNIUS: Lithuanian film industry experienced some positive changes over the past five years, the biggest one being the increased popularity of domestic films. Although the domestic market share dropped from 23.18% in 2014 to 13.81% in 2015, the top 10 highest grossing films in Lithuanian cinemas in 2015 included three Lithuanian productions.

    These films are Inexperienced by Julius Paulikas produced by Film Jam and distributed by Incognito Films, Saulius and Paulius Robbed Them All by Simonas Aškelavičius and Ričardas Marcinkus, produced and distributed by Full Screen, and Kunigo Naudą Velniai Gaudo by Alvydas Šlepikas, produced and distributed by Singing fish. All together they have reached over half a million viewers and earned over 1,614,436 EUR.

    However, the most popular Lithuanian film of all times remains Emilis Vėlyvis‘ Redirected, which had over 322,000 admissions in 2014.

    According to the Lithuanian Film Centre, 290 films screened in domestic cinemas in 2015 with overall admissions of 3,330,451. The gross box office rose by 7%, from 14,373,356 EUR to 15,391,806 EUR. Ten Lithuanian films premiered in 2015 and had 456,273 admissions and 2,091,570 EUR gross income.

    Market share of European films increased by 4 % in 2015 up to 18%, while the market share of US films slightly increased from 62.45% in 2014 to 65.48% in 2015.
