VILNIUS: The German production company Ufa Fiction (producers Benjamin Benedict, Nico Hofmann and Martin Bromber) and local service producer Ramūnas Škikas (production company Ahil) are shooting the TV drama Kruso in Lithuania for public broadcasters MDR and ARD Degeto with backing from MDM Mitteldeutsche Medien-Förderung and the Lithuanian Film Centre.

Based on the best-selling debut novel by German writer and poet Lutz Seiler, Kruso tells about a young man in free fall during the closing months of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), in 1989. The Soviet system and the old order is about to collapse. A young literature student named Edgar Bendler, fleeing grief (his girlfriend was knocked down and killed by a tram), travels to the Baltic island of Hiddensee. Thousands have tried to swim to Denmark, and freedom, from the Baltic island; some escaped, but most drowned. Ed takes a job as a dishwasher and falls in with a motley group of idealists and utopians, led by the charismatic Kruso, as the tide of history begins to wash over Eastern Europe. Kruso won the German Book Prize (Deutscher Buchpreis) in 2014. The script was written by Thomas Kirchner and the director is Thomas Stuber.

Principle photography in Lithuanian seacoast began on 4 September 2017 and the shoot will complete on 11 October. The television broadcast is planned for 2018 in Germany.
