Despite being illiterate, Ndeye Ndiaye Tyson became famous in Senegal and a guiding light for her countrymen. The two Senegalese men, Abdoulaye Thiam and Modou Faye, hope to be scouted by a famous promoter like Tyson, win the fight for a better life and become the next wrestling celebrity.
The film is directed by Edward Porembny and produced by his company AMP Polska (www.amppolska.com) and coproduced by the French production company Alexandre Cornu's Les Films du Tambour de Soie, French TV broadcaster ARTE, British TV Channel Aljazeera and Polish TVP (www.tvp.pl).
Wrestling in Dakar received financial support from the Polish Film Institute (www.pisf.pl), CNC (www.institut-francais.org.uk), MEDIA Development Program (www.ec.europa.eu), MEDIA TV Broadcasting Program (www.mediadeskpoland.eu) and France’s Procirep. It has been sold to broadcasters from Norway (NRK), Poland (Canal+ www.canalplus.pl), Ireland (TG4) and Estonia (ETV2, www.etv.err.ee). The film is handled by French sales and distribution company, Insomnia World Sales. The budget is slightly more than 1 m PLN.
The documentary was shot over one year between July 2011 and July 2012 by the international (Polish, French, British and Senegal) crew. It has three versions: 47, 52 and 90 minutes long. The full-length version will premiere in March 2013 on France’s ARTE, Poland’s CANAL+ and Norway’s NRK.
