Serving a growing role in the Poznan region's major annual film and music event, the Rozbitek Institute will soon be mentoring filmmakers, writers and composers, based on the US Sundance Institute model, founder Jan AP Kaczmarek told FNE.

He plans to host artists in residence at Rozbitek, housed in a renovated 19th-century palace, located an hour outside Poznan, where it now serves as venue for artists and a forum for seminars, workshops and conferences.

Rozbitek is a centerpiece for the Transatlantyk fest, which wrapped a full slate of free educational events and performances Saturday, featuring director Xawery Żuławski, LA-based screenwriter Shem Bitterman and classical pianist Gloria Campaner, three of the hottest tickets among dozens of appearances.

Conceived as a facility where European and US filmmakers, composers, writers and others can combine forces to develop projects for the screen and stage, the Rozbitek venture hosted key events during the festival Aug 2-9, which has a diverse agenda, from celebrating progressive causes to challenging young composers to write scores on the spot after watching short films.

Others inspiring mentors this year were Czech writer/director Petr Zelenka, veteran Polish-born US producer/director Waldemar Kalinowski, Sundance music program director Peter Golub and indie producer Zachary Matz, among dozens of film and music professionals who addressed audiences.

Film music is central to the mission of Transatlantyk and Rozbitek, both founded by Polish Oscar-winning composer Kaczmarek, and events such as concerts by Yoko Ono and Marco Beltrami, composer of the Snowpiercer score, drew crowds estimated at 4,100 to Poznan this August.
