Warsaw 44 is a costume, war drama about the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 filled with special effects and epic battle scenes. Komasa decided to create his own auteur version of the events and focus on the youths who took part in the fight. The result is an epic picture about love, passion for freedom and combat presented in a Hollywood-like manner.
Komasa co-wrote the script with Maciej Pisuk. The characters are part of the partisan group "Radosław" that took part in the Uprising and fought their way from the Wola district to Czerniaków. Komasa gathered a young cast consisting of debutants and professional actors that includes Józef Pawłowski, Zofia Wichłacz, Anna Próchniak, Antoni Królikowski, Maurycy Popiel, Filip Gurłacz and Karolina Staniec.
The film was shot on location in Warsaw, Lódz, Wrocław, Walim and Swiebodzice between May and August of 2013. The movie was produced by Akson Studio with a major budget of 25 m PLN in coproduction with Telewizja Polska, Orange Polska, Narodowe Centrum Kultury, Mazowiecki Instytut Kultury, Mazowiecki Fundusz Filmowy, and Muzeum Powstania Warszawskiego. The main sponsor of the film is ING Bank Śląski. The film had received 6 m PLN from the Polish Film Institute. The film also received support from Miasto Łódź and The German-Polish Cooperation Foundation.
"Jan Komasa had dreamed a production that I would have never even thought of: costume cinema about young people made by someone who is roughly the same age as the characters. It's worth pointing out that he started pushing for this title in 2005, when films like Andrzej Wajda's Katyń or the popular history series Time of Honour didn't even exist," producer Jan Kwieciński told FNE.
The film will open in Polish cinemas on 19 September 2014 distributed by Kino Świat.
