The film premiered at Karlovy Vary IFF and was also showcased at the industry event Polish Days at the T-Mobile New Horizons Film Festival. It was in the main competition at the 40th Gdynia Film Festival and opened in Polish cinemas on 2 October 2015. VUE Movie is the Polish distributor.

Chemo is inspired by the life of director's wife, Magda Prokopowicz, the creator of Rak'n'Roll, a foundation fighting against cancer, who died in 2012 after a long struggle with her illness. The story written by Katarzyna Sarnowska follows 30 year old Benek (Tomasz Schuchardt), who accidentally meets the magnetic Lena (Agnieszka Żulewska). As they fall in love, he realizes that Lena has cancer and she is not willing to treat it. Moreover, she gets pregnant.

The film was produced by Filmokracja in coproduction with Vue Movie Distribution, HBO Europe, Film Produkcja, DI Factory, Film Ilumination and Aeroplan. The project received a production grant of approximately 475,000 EUR / 2 m PLN from the Polish Film Institute.
